In the spirit of the season, we thought we would share our new, favorite holiday tradition. No, it doesn’t involve figgy pudding or hanging things with care on mantles, or roaming the streets warbling off-key renditions of “Silver Bells” and “Winter Wonderland.” As you might expect from the V.F.C.S.D., it involves movies: many of us have made the Christmas-night jaunt to the local cinema a must-do following the gluttony of a multi-course holiday meal. And what better film to indulge in (with a pocketful of candy canes, natch) than Rob Marshall’s highly anticipated, big-screen adaptation of the Broadway musical, Into the Woods. We were lucky enough to catch a sneak peek of this modern twist on the old-school fairy tales of yore before its Christmas Day release and so, below, we’ve compiled the Top Four Reasons You Need to Go See Into the Woods:
1. The epic-comic duet by Chris Pine, who plays Cinderella’s charming Prince, and Billy Magnussen, Rapunzel’s beloved, titled “Agony,” which will have you laughing out loud (good) and spilling your popcorn all over the floor (not good).
2. The highly stylized, highly gorgeous cinematography which will make you feel as if you’ve been dropped into a very English fairy tale—or an Annie Leibovitz recreation of one.
3. The impeccably lush costumes: Cinderella’s über-dreamy ball gown, Meryl Streep’s “hot witch” costume, and Johnny Depp’s Wolf ensemble, a Zoot suit complete with matching hat and tie (Oscar®-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood’s fresh take on the classic, teeth-gnashing character).
4. The oh-so sly humor that keeps the film modern despite its “Olde English” setting (i.e. “I was raised to be Charming, not sincere.” —Chris Pine as The Prince).
Into the Woods hits theaters nationwide on December 25, 2015. In the meantime, check out the official trailer here. Merry Watching to all, and to all a goodnight!
